The details of large pay packets earned by thousands of temporary staff at a major company were accidentally revealed via email this week. A recruitment agency by error sent the information about Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) temps which showed they received up to £2,000 a day – which is the equivalent of £500,000 a year. This revelation comes at the same time as RBS is in the process of cutting thousands of permanent staff jobs. A 70-year-old man is believed to be the oldest arrested for being involved in the violence and looting that plagued London recently. Police have not named the man but have said he was held in connection with the theft from a shop in west London, on August 8, 2011. The individual was released after receiving a police caution. Visitors to the new Westfield shopping centre situated close to London's Olympic Park may have their cars checked by security staff before they can enter. From this month until the end of the Paralympic Games in September 2012, G4S security staff will inspect vehicles entering the public car parks. Those chosen for searches will be asked to pull over from the line of traffic before continuing their journey into the centre’s car parks. More than 2,000 businesses with fewer than 10 employees were surveyed by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), and many said they struggle to recruit the staff they desire. Two southern England police authorities could face having to cope with redundancies after signing a merger agreement. A new combined unit will share and manage police data across the two forces, will be based in existing locations across Hampshire and Thames Valley. A city council said it will put an extra £1 million towards staff salaries so a pay cut can be marginally reduced. Southampton City Council has been in a protracted dispute with unions – who have rejected the new deal – over new contracts forcing council workers earning more than £17,500 to take a pay cut of up to 5.5%. British Transport Police (BTP) said patrols are being increased to keep young people off railway lines. The problems are especially bad in the West Midlands and for this reason one station in the area (at Yate) has had eight security cameras installed following a spate of vandalism. BTP added that last year, between August 1 and September 30, 82 offences were recorded with the majority being for trespass. A spokesman said the school summer holidays traditionally coincided with a rise in trespassing. Half of all working mothers could be taking cuts in their maternity pay if proposed changes to parental leave are implemented. The TUC gave this warning in its submission to a Government consultation on proposals to allow mothers and fathers to share parental leave. The TUC is worried that mothers could lose out financially if the current 52-week statutory maternity leave is replaced by an 18-week period of designated leave for mothers, after which time at home can be shared between parents.
