What is an access control system?

An access control system is an electronic security solution that manages and restricts who can enter specific areas of a building, site, or facility. It replaces traditional locks and keys with electronic credentials, such as smart cards, key fobs, PIN codes, or biometric identifiers like fingerprints and facial recognition, and uses readers, door controllers, and management software to grant or deny access in real time. Every access event is automatically logged, giving administrators a complete audit trail of who entered which area and when.

How does an access control system work?

When someone presents a credential at a reader, by tapping a smart card, scanning a fingerprint, or looking at a facial recognition camera, the reader sends the credential data to a door controller, which checks it against a database of authorised users. If the credential is valid and the person has permission to enter that specific area at that time, the controller releases the electronic door lock and grants access. The entire process typically takes less than a second, and every transaction is recorded in the system's software for reporting and audit purposes.

What are the benefits of an access control system for businesses?

Access control gives businesses significantly greater security, visibility, and control compared to traditional locks and keys. Key benefits include the ability to restrict access to sensitive areas, a complete digital audit trail of all entry and exit events, instant revocation of access rights when an employee leaves or a credential is lost, and real-time visibility of who is on-site at any given moment. Access control also reduces ongoing costs, there are no locks to change when keys go missing, and the data it generates supports compliance with health and safety, fire safety, and data protection regulations.

What types of access control door systems are there?

Access control systems are usually classified in two ways; by credential type and by system architecture. By credential, the main types are card and fob systems (RFID, MIFARE, DESFire), PIN keypads, biometric readers (fingerprint, facial recognition, vein), and mobile credentials using Bluetooth or NFC on a smartphone. By architecture, systems are either standalone (one door, programmed locally), networked (multiple doors managed from central software such as Tensor's WinAC.NET), or cloud-based (managed through a web browser from any location). Most organisations choose a networked or cloud system so they can add doors, users, and integrations as the business grows.

How much does an access control door system cost?

Pricing depends on the number of doors, the credential technology, and whether the system is standalone or networked. As a rough UK guide, a single-door standalone system typically starts from around £800-£1,500 installed, while a networked card-based system costs £1,500-£3,000 per door once controllers, software licences, and cabling are included. Biometric readers (fingerprint or facial recognition) typically add £400-£1,800 per door. Most installations pay back through lower credential replacement costs, elimination of lock changes when keys go missing, and reduced administrative time.

Do you offer biometric access control?

Yes. Tensor supplies a full range of biometric access control readers, including fingerprint, finger-vein, and facial recognition terminals, as part of our integrated access control platform. Biometric readers eliminate the risk of lost, shared, or duplicated credentials, and can be deployed on their own or combined with smart cards and PINs for multi-factor authentication on higher-security doors. All Tensor biometric solutions are deployed in line with UK GDPR requirements, including encrypted template storage and alternative-credential options for employees who do not wish to enrol.

Can an access control door system integrate with time and attendance?

Yes, and this is one of the key advantages of choosing an integrated platform. Tensor's access control and time and attendance systems share the same credential database, so a single smart card, fob, or biometric enrolment works for both clocking in and opening doors, removing duplicate data entry and keeping HR, payroll, and security records in sync. Integration also supports real-time roll calls during a fire evacuation, accurate working-time records for compliance, and automatic revocation of both door access and clocking rights the moment an employee leaves the organisation.

What is the difference between access control and door entry?

They overlap so much that people swap the terms without thinking, but they are not quite the same. Door entry is the narrow job of letting someone in at a specific door or gate, typically a visitor buzzing in and being admitted over an audio or video intercom. Access control is the bigger picture: it governs who can reach which parts of a site, and at what times, using cards, fobs, PINs or biometrics, with every entry logged. Plenty of businesses need both, which is why Tensor runs door entry panels and site-wide access control from one piece of software, WinAC.NET.

Is access control GDPR compliant and how is employee data protected?

Yes, as long as it is set up and run properly. The system holds personal data like names and entry logs, and if you use fingerprint or facial recognition, that is special category biometric data under UK GDPR and needs a clear lawful basis on top of the usual rules. Day to day, it comes down to sensible habits: only capture what you actually need, do not keep it longer than you have to, lock down who can view it, and store it securely. WinAC.NET supports all of that with encrypted, access-restricted records and retention you can configure, so the system works with your GDPR obligations rather than against them.

Access Control Systems

Operated by contactless smart cards, key fobs, RF transmitters/receivers or facial/fingerprint biometrics, a Tensor access control system gives you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of any day, placing it at the forefront of security solutions.

Our access control solutions are modular in design and have the advanced capability of being able to adapt and extend to integrate with a time and attendance system seamlessly and without complication. The system will adapt easily to your specific security environment, whether you need to secure a large, multi-site facility or a smaller installation with a few doors; and can easily scale up as your operations grow.

Door Access Control Systems

Tensor door access control runs anything from a single door to a fully networked system across multiple sites. Whether you need card and fob entry, a PIN keypad, biometric readers or a door entry intercom panel, the system controls who comes through each door and when. Every reader, lock and door release is managed from the same WinAC.NET software, so one platform runs the whole building.
