Bedford Borough Council CCTV “renting” scheme proves to be a huge success

"Renting out" the services of their CCTV surveillance system's operators to local businesses has proven to be an extremely lucrative enterprise for the Bedford Borough Council, who've already managed to make more money out of this scheme than initially planned.

According to a news report in the local media, the council has already earned an impressive £13,100 in the 2012/13 financial year, far better than the initial earning predictions, of around £10,000 by 2015.

The authority's CCTV control room is staffed around the clock and the idea is for those staff to monitor other firms' camera coverage. A Bedford Borough Council spokesman said: "The council's award-winning Public Space CCTV Service is generating revenue by providing 'out of hours' support to third party systems.
