Six elderly people were injured in a fire at a residential home in the north west. Firefighters rescued five of the victims and five others were led to safety shortly before crews arrived. The Lancashire constabulary is treating the blaze as deliberate and are desperate for anyone with information to contact them, as one of the casualties was a 95-year-old woman who sustained third degree burns. Record numbers of primary school children skipped lessons without permission last year. The Department for Education has revealed that the number of primary age youngsters skipping class continues to rise. The figures show that primary pupils skipped 0.68 per cent of half days, up from 0.65% for the same terms in 2008/09, and 0.52% three years ago in 2006/07. The statistics suggest that 22,700 primary pupils missed class on a typical school day in 2009/10 through truancy, family holidays, illness and other reasons. Police are hunting a gang seen running away from a scene of suspected arson at a care home in the West Country. The alleged criminal act took place on the outskirts of the Gloucestershire building, which takes care of elderly and vulnerable people. The fire was extinguished by firefighters before it spread to the home. Inspector Tony Rymer, of Gloucester Police, said: "This is being seen as a crime of arson. Youths wearing hoodies were seen running away from the home in the direction of Tesco." A cost-cutting measure is seeing some public toilets in Exeter under threat of closure by the city council. The council said: "We appreciate that any closure of a public toilet will be an inconvenience to someone, because that person may either have to walk a little further to the next public toilet, use a customer toilet when they are visiting a shop, cafe or public house, or pay to use a privately run public convenience such as in Princesshay,” adding that a minimum of 16 public conveniences will remain. A new study by MPs dealing with the public accounts has questioned if ministers and their departments can come up with the savings required from the public purse. The Members’ body said: "The inability of departments to improve value for money in a time of increasing budgets casts doubts on government's ability to reduce costs now while minimising the impact on front-line services." The Scottish National Party (SNP) conference was told that Scotland can "no longer afford the Union". This statement – not really a surprise from a left-leaning nationalist party advocating secession from the United Kingdom – came from SNP finance secretary John Swinney. Callous burglars took the equipment used by a clown – including a giant-size giraffe shaped cycle – in order to sell for scrap. The entertainer at children's parties called Uncle Sam said of the six-foot unicycle that it was worth little as scrap but would be difficult to get a new one. Members of the Trades Union Congress rallied at two north-east venues, Newcastle and Sunderland, to demonstrate concern at thousands of public sector workers facing unemployment in the north. Pupils faced being taught in temporary buildings for at least a week following some youths breaking into a school, stealing items and causing extensive fire damage. Stirling Council said parents would be notified of the changes of venue at East Plean Primary School, Scotland. The school and nursery were already scheduled to be closed for three days for staff training. A council spokesperson added that the damage looked "pretty bad". One boy has already been arrested, while a 15-year-old boy charged in connection with the break-in, but not the fire, was referred to the children's panel. Despite issuing redundancy notices in the summer and facing government reductions in funding by 20%, Durham Police Authority says that front-line policing is a priority. The force must deal with £17.5m of cuts over the next four years.
